By 6 p.m. on a Tuesday in August, Lockport Street stops being a street and becomes something closer to a driveway. Two downtown restaurant spaces have seen recent turnover; one was damaged by fire, and both have new restaurant operators, one already open and the other expanding into its space.

The Corner That Sat Empty, Then Caught Fire
The building at 24522 W. Lockport Street, on the corner at Van Dyke Road, spent two decades as Larry's Diner before it closed in May 2023. For nearly two years after that, the space sat vacant. Then, in March 2025, a fire tore through the empty building, causing more than $200,000 in damage.
Most owners facing that kind of damage on a building that had already been empty for two years would walk away. Instead, according to Mayor John Argoudelis, the new owners chose to rehabilitate the structure rather than tear it down. The result opened its doors on July 21, 2026, as Sushi Uni, a Japanese restaurant whose only other Midwest location sits outside Kansas City, Missouri. The corner, vacant after Larry's Diner closed, is now a working kitchen again.
A Restaurant Space Gets a New Restaurant Tenant
A few blocks over, at 15120 S. Des Plaines Street, the problem wasn't fire. It was churn. Front Street Cantina held that address for roughly two decades before closing in early 2023. Glory Days Bar and Grill took over later that year and lasted only a few months. Altiro Latin Fusion, the fourth location for chef Roberto Avila, opened there in 2024 and closed this past June, just two years in.
Altiro closed at this location, while its locations in Wheaton, Aurora, and Geneva remain open. Now Los Razos, a carry-out spot currently operating in front of the local Menards, is expanding into the space as a full sit-down restaurant, buying some of Altiro's equipment to help get the new concept running.
The two restaurant changes are taking place along the downtown blocks that close to car traffic every Tuesday night from June through August.
What Tuesday Actually Does for This Street
Cruise Nights isn't a novelty event tacked onto downtown Plainfield's calendar. It's the Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce's weekly infrastructure, running every Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., closing Lockport Street between James Street and Route 59 along with a stretch of Des Plaines Street, where a designated area called the Hawg Pen gives motorcyclists their own spot to park. The 2026 season kicked off June 2 and runs its final week on August 18, sponsored this year by Webb Chevrolet.
The season is themed week to week, and the themes come with sponsors:
- July 28 — Corvette Night
- August 4 — Mustang Night, sponsored by Rod Baker Ford, doubling as National Night Out
- August 11 — Hawaiian Shirt Night, sponsored by D'Arcy Motors
- August 18 — Final Cruise Night of the season, sponsored by Webb Chevrolet
None of that theming stops someone from parking whatever they drove that day. Local dealerships sponsor the free weekly street closure, putting their names on banners along the route.
Local businesses have also described Cruise Nights as a way to connect with customers. Rick Hakey, who had run his State Farm office on Lockport Street for 28 years as of 2024, told the Herald-News that the event brings him both existing customers and new ones curious about insurance, and that on a normal Tuesday, his office wouldn't see thousands of people walking past the door. Dr. Jeni Waeltz, who opened the physical location for her house-call veterinary practice, The Welcome Waggin, in 2021, said the weekly raffle she runs for kids, dogs, and cats has genuinely helped her grow the business in the Plainfield area.
Restaurant Changes Along the Cruise Nights Route
The restaurant changes and Cruise Nights share downtown blocks. The event brings people to the street on a regular weekly schedule. Sushi Uni and Los Razos are opening or expanding along the same route as Cruise Nights, which closes to cars on a predictable schedule.
This summer, the restaurant openings and expansion add to the activity on a stretch of Lockport Street already familiar to Cruise Nights regulars.

As of this week, the 2026 season has one date remaining: the Final Cruise Night on August 18, sponsored by Webb Chevrolet. It runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. along Lockport Street.
